Nguroje, Nigeria, 2023

If you haven’t figured it out yet my name is Julian DiCecco. I’m currently studying at the University of Ottawa and have also been a life-long student of the School of Hard Knocks. In my 23 years I have learned to value: open mindedness, hard work, and above all, a decent sense of humour.

Open Mindedness: There are an infinite number of ways to look at a problem, at an idea, or at life itself (a.k.a. the biggest problem of all). If you aren’t open minded, you severely limit your point of view.

Hard Work: There are very few shortcuts in life. If you want to be successful in a certain avenue then you better learn to love working hard.

Humour: You can’t be open minded if you can’t laugh at yourself and working hard sucks if you can’t joke around while you do it. Humour greases the wheels.

There are many rules/values I try to live by, but as of now I would say that these 3 dominate my belief system. Living by these rules I have gone on many adventures, accomplished some incredible things and met some amazing people. I am excited to see where I’ll end up next, what I’m going to do there, and who I’m going to meet there.

I have recently returned from a trip to West Africa with my ([self-proclaimed]model) girlfriend. We drove from Nigeria all the way down to Cape Town, South Africa. I really realized just how much we take for granted here in Canada. Since returning I have been trying hard to appreciate the basic things that I didn’t even notice before: clean water, food security, and personal safety.

I was inspired by some incredibly hard working, joyful people on our journey. Now that I’m back home I have redoubled my efforts toward my chosen career. In my spare time I work toward software projects that interest me. I make a ton of mistakes and constantly hit problems that I have to solve. I love it. If you’re interested to see what I have been working on, check out my portfolio page or my github. I upload most of my projects there.
